PSG Travel Awardees 2016 & Becker Prize winner

The selection committee made up of Belinda Aquino (U Hawaii Manoa), Bernardita Churchill (U Philippines Diliman; chair) and Megan Thomas (UC Santa Cruz) is pleased to announce the Philippine Studies Group Travel Award to three graduate students presenting papers at the 2016 AAS Conference. They will each receive $275, matching the AAS graduate student stipend. The awardees, in alphabetical order, are:

Maria Carinnes A. Gonzalez (PhD Program, U Philippines-Diliman) presenting her paper Food Security and Exclusion among Urban Elderly in Manila Slums; Adrian de Leon (PhD Program, U Toronto) presenting his paper Street Food as a “Crisis-Ethos”: Food Insecurity and Filipino Culinary Heritage in Manila during the Marcos Regime, 1965-1986; and Sharon Quinsaat (PhD Program, U Pittsburgh) presenting her paper Foreign Policy Threats and Opportunities: The Movement against the Marcos Dictatorship in the U.S. and the Netherlands.

Please join us at the PSG Annual Meeting on Friday, April 1st, 7:30 pm at the Sheraton Seattle meeting room “University” to honor our graduate student colleagues. We will also elect three replacement members to the advisory board, and a treasurer to replace Megan who is coming in as country chair. Read more about the newly expanded PSG Travel Award.

In related award news, Soledad Reyes (Ateneo de Manila U) is this year’s recipient of the Becker Translation Prize for her book “What Now, Ricky” written originally in Tagalog/Filipino by Rosario de Guzman Lingat and published by Liwayway in the 1960s. The translation was published by Anvil Press in 2013 and was nominated by the publisher. Vince Rafael will receive Dr. Reyes’ award in her place; the award ceremony for multiple AAS prizes as well as the Presidential Address will take place on Friday April 1st at 9:00 am at the Washington Convention Center 6 E (next to the Seattle Washington conference hotel).
